The Task: Subversion is an art project which subversively makes use of search engine optimization techniques and principles. SEO techniques can be used for promoting critical thought instead of advertising goods and services. In our project pages we provide access to the level of hidden code which contains relevant theoretical texts related to the linked topics. But there is also the visual surface of the pages which is an aesthetic reflection of the invisible contents. Enjoy both!

The Background: SEO Techniques

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a phenomenon that occurrs along with the fast growth of web content. The more content, the more difficult it is to find what you are looking for. Thus, web search engines are becoming an increasingly critical technology. Their search and ranking algorithms determine which contents will be visited — since most users will start their session from a search engine request.

This is even more problematic with a hegemonic regime as it has come into existence in many regions today where only one search provider dominates. The search engine providers want to earn money, and, for them, there are only three ways: display advertisements, make the owners of indexed pages pay or make the user pay for the service. However, in reality only the first two options seem to be viable, as, so far, users have been quite reluctant to pay for good results. That is indeed problematic. The companies/content providers have to pay and they do pay: for advertisements, for being priority listed, or, for search engine optimization services which make them expect to be on the first results page(s). Therefore, in the end, it is money that determines what is relevant.

Even if the search providers would like to present users with the »best« results: today’s search engines are stupid. They rely on trivial calculations of simple numerical data and mostly ignore semantics. They count key words, in-going links and other parameters and thus produce a ranking/relevance score.
